Avonis Farms Limited, a fast-growing farm in Oloma, Akoko-edo Local Government Area, Edo State, South-South Nigeria has recorded a low yam harvest this year.

Lamenting the low harvest at the weekend, Mr. Willy Odofin, the CEO/Managing Director, Avonis Farms Limited told AfemaiToday that the low harvest arose from the massive water discharge by Ojirami Dam in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area which flooded the yam section of his vast farm thereby sweeping away over ten thousand tubers of yam. “I was away on a short break in Benin City, Edo State when the farm manager called to inform me of the flooding orchestrated by a massive water discharge by Ojirami Dam which veered into the promising yam section of my farm and did a clean sweep for over three days”, he lamented.

Mr. Odofin further spoke, “Very unfortunately, we lost, by estimate, a whopping sum of eight million naira (N8m) which has dealt a great blow to the growth of the farm.”

The automobile engineer-turned farmer, therefore, called on Edo State government to come to the aid of farmers in Oloma axis of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area by re-channeling the drainage to prevent future flooding of farms in the axis.
